About Bubwith Leisure & Sports Centre
Bubwith is a village of just over twelve hundred adults situated in the Vale of York, 15
Miles south-east of the City. It serves as a nucleus for several surrounding smaller
settlements, having a general store, delicatessen, family butcher, primary school, doctors’ surgery, ancient church and a public house.
The Bubwith Leisure & Sports Centre manages six acres of land and its contents,
football, cricket, tennis, children’s play equipment, car park and garage, and the Leisure
Centre. We aim to improve people’s lives, physically, mentally and socially. We provide
facilities for others to run classes and activities, for example Pilates, karate, ballroom,
Latin and freestyle dancing, and we run events ourselves such as dances, parties,
quizzes, bingo, junior discos and cinema. We are home to an indoor short mat bowls
club, a sixty-four-piece orchestra and a sixteen-piece swing band. We have our own
youth club and host an Under 5s group.
We are part way through the process of renovating the Leisure Centre to make it fit for
the twenty-first century. We began in 2017 and overhauled the kitchen and disabled
facilities, replaced the windows and doors and upgraded the bar and sports changing
rooms. This year we have completed Phase One, the refurbishment of the hall, which
occupies four sevenths of the building, with new heating, lighting, acoustic panelling,
insulation and external cladding, at a project cost of £250,000.
The Centre was re-opened in the Autumn of 2019 by BBC Look North’s Harry Gration, along with members of the local community, and this was followed by and afternoon/evening of dance and music.
We have a well-stocked separate bar and lounge, run by a professional bar staff and we are sure we can make your event a time to remember.
The Main Hall is now a fabulous location for functions, dances, receptions and celebrations of al sorts as can been seen by the attached photos.
We have been active during the period of COVID lockdown, managing to secure several grants to bring our toilet facilities up to match the standard of the main hall. This work will be completed by the end of August 2020.
