Borrowdale Institute

First opened in 1921, the Borrowdale Institute is situated in the small village of Rosthwaite. 

After a successful lottery and crowdfunding campaign, the Borrowdale Institute has been restored to a very high standard. Works included adding an extension, a brand new kitchen and bar, all new facilities, addition of a balcony and the restoration of the remainder of the building. 

There are 3 main areas within the building; The Main Hall, The Community Room (kitchen & bar) and The Herdwick Suite. Each room can be hired alone, or the Institute can be hired as a whole. 

The Main Hall has a seated capacity of 102 (seated for dining), or 110 seated auditorium style. Capacity for standing is up to 204 people making it ideal for larger events. 

The Community room houses the main kitchen and bar area - so is ideal to be hired alongside the Main Hall. The seated capacity in The Community Room is 36 people. This room has relaxed seating (i.e. sofas and armchairs) and views over the adjacent field towards Castle Crag and the valley beyond. 

The Herdwick Suite honours the farmers and the Herdwick sheep within the Valley. This room features conference style seating and is ideal for presentations, meetings and suchlike. It has a capacity of 34 seated and a kitchenette that is ideal for preparing beverages and a small amount of food preparation. This room also has a balcony that can be accessed through 2 patio doors. The balcony has spectacular views of Castle Crag and the valley beyond. 

When hiring for a wedding, the entire building is hired. 

We have a lift that provides access to The Herdwick Suite on the upper floor.
