Disappointing would be an understatement. Please be wary if booking this venue for a special occasion.
We viewed the hall in the summer of 2023, the hall was pristine and recently painted and the grounds were well kept, so we were happy to book the venue for our wedding reception for the following year. With natural wooden beams and floors it was exactly what we were looking for.
Fast forward to the day before we got married, coming to set up and decorate the hall we were met with: visibly damp/mouldy walls (we knew of this issue when we viewed the hall, but the walls had seemingly not been maintained), dirty floors which clearly had not been cleaned/hoovered in weeks, unclean toilets some of which had dried urine and faeces on the seats as well as the main light in the men's toilets not working. Outside, the grounds were not as well kept with weeds coming across the steps outside.
In summary, collectively between ourselves and our in-laws who thankfully came to help set up, we spent about 3 hours cleaning i.e. hoovering (it's a big hall) which produced 3 full bins from the hoover, we dusted and cleaned surfaces in the kitchen, and cleaned the toilets and swept the stairs and pruned the weeds. We also removed bin bags from the toilets which had leftover rubbish from whomever was at the hall previously. As part of our hire agreement, you are to clean the hall after your event but we did not expect to do the job of a cleaner when we arrived to set up. To top it off, when we tried contacting someone from the hall to discuss the situation, we were met by an incredibly rude man called Richard who came in with an attitude as soon as he arrived, stating "well what do you want me to do about it", "well what do you expect when you book a village hall".
Overall, it was a disappointing and unpleasant experience, especially one to experience the day before our wedding. I have reached out to Denise the secretary to ask for a partial refund in the form of 3 hours of the hourly rate they would charge a cleaner (taken from our hire agreement) as we worked very hard to clean the hall for our wedding reception. We were told when viewing the hall it would be clean and ready for us to set up, but this was not the case and arguably it was false advertising.
About Bardsea malt kiln village hall
Bardsea Malt Kiln has a date stone of 1829. As the name suggests it used to be a Malt Kiln where they roasted the malt for making beer. When commercial activity ceased it eventually became the Village Hall, and is owned by the Villagers.
The Malt Kiln is run and managed by a Management Committee from the village. In May 2003 the hall was closed for extensive refurbishment, funded by a grant from the National Lottery. It was re-opened in April 2004.
The refurbished hall provides modern facilities, with full access for all, and is well equipped for a variety of uses and includes a small stage.
The hall is available for hire at very reasonable rates. Weekly events include yoga and Tai Chi; it is very popular for weddings and other parties, is an ideal venue for all types of meeting, and is also a good concert venue.
